This is a non-er question, so I thought posting it here would be best. I'm currently treating a fish for god knows what. She's a rosy glass barb (see other post in this forum about them). We've never had a fish quite this sick. Any fish that has died in our tank, we didn't see it coming, we didn't know what it was or how to treat it (we found out the hard way what dropsy was), or it's been killed by our pleco.

We have her in a 2.5 gallon tank at the moment because she is so sick. We've lost quite a few of this breed of fish in the last month or so, and at least 3 in the last two weeks. 2 of them from something that we were never able to determine. The others have just kind of died out of the blue, in fact, our male was showing *no* signs of being sick before he died.

At this point, this little girl is laying at the bottom of the tank. She looks kind of swollen and distended (i think that's the correct word) and one of her eyes is popping out and swollen. She also was bit by another fish about 4 days ago and when that happened, we added a bit of melafix to the tank to make sure that the sore didn't get bad. She is still her normal clearish yellow color. She keeps trying to swim, but she only moves a little bit and it's never quite swimming...more like jerking. She is still going to the bathroom, but she can't eat because she can't swim to her food. I'm thinking of trying to hand feed her later just to see if she will even eat.

At the moment I'm treating her with Maracyn-Two which is for dropsy, septicemia, popeye and fin and tail rot. It was the medicine that treated the most things that she could possibly have. The way she looks all I can figure is dropsy. I don't even know if we can save her at this point, but I can't give up yet. We weren't able to save the others, and I really want to be able to keep her alive and healthy.

BUT...the medicine is only supposed to be given for 5 days. After 5 days or more, if she is still in this condition, I can't leave her like this. She is obviously miserable laying there and gasping at the bottom of the tank. In this case, when should I euthanize? Should I just keep trying to make her comfortable and give her meds for the next 5 days? Or does this sound like she might be too far gone?

Sadly yes she does have a number of bacterial infections there, she sounds in a bad way, if you could of issolated her i would of tryed her on tetracycline, clove oil and vodka for putting a fish down , sad, sorry.

Well, after three days she was only getting worse so we had to put her down. Actually, let me rephrase that...we were GOING to put her down, but almost as soon as we got her out of the tank, she immediately died.

Thanks for the help. We will no longer be getting rosy glass barbs. They get to a certain age it seems and then all heck breaks loose and they die a horrible death. Even the ones left in the pet store (the older ones) are starting to swell and get the same look to them as ours did before they died.
