I got 2 more platys about 1 month ago now, and in that time they've had fry twice. The first batch we noticed around the 22nd of October, and you can now clearly see their colour/pattern, about the length of my thumbnail and too big now to be eaten. However, I can't really tell what gender they are. We were planning on keeping 1 or 2 of them but don't want a male. How long until we can tell what gender they are?

You have to wait till they mature. Then, you check for the male's gonopodium.

All livebearers start out looking female. The male will develop a gonopodium in place of their anal fin. Sometimes they are slow to develop, and so you can go to the LFS and buy only females and find later that one of the "females" has morphed into a male. It didn't actually change gender, it was just slow in developing the gonopodium.

Ah okay, thank you. So we face a wait of several more weeks then. Will my tank be able to take the bioload that long? It's a cycled tank but only had it since September.

I know when I got my guppy fry, he was already about 1/2" and he took a week or two before his anal fin even started developing the gonopodium shape.
