we have about 10 platys that are outgrowing the 15 litre tank so the wife wants a 30 or 60 litre bio-orb tank for the bed room as its the only space we have whats your views on these tanks????

WOW 10 in a 15L my word you defo need a new tank :good: not to keen on them to honest, not because they dont do a great job but i was once gunna get one but was talked out of it, TBH i think they are ugly, just my own taste really but if the space you have left would fit this tank then the 60L is the better option and you could prob fit in a few smaller fish like no bigger than harliquins
my mums got a 30L with platy and gups harliquins cory at the moment and shes well over stocked, they keep dying but shes finally come to terms that she needs a larger tank after nagging her for 6 months to do it.

They outgrew the tank when you put them in  As mentioned you are way overstocked (but you know that...enough on that). I would def. go with the 60 litre as this will give the fish more room and make it easier on you with water changes and water quality as well. I personally like the look of regualr tanks much more than the bio-orbs but if it suites your tastes then great :good: Good luck with your new tank.

Gotcha :good: if you need an excuse tell her there will be more surface area for the fish and the result will be stronger healthier fry! Sounds good to me

Well my mum has a 30l brackish bi-orb (gotta be a first) with a whole load of juvie mollies in that keep breeding , so we will be looking to re-home the fry and keep a couple of pairs :).
As for my views on it - I think the 30 and 60 are fine for smaller fish but nothing bigger, and the 15 is just cruel.

Hi all,
thanx for all the replys they were most helpfull,
i managed to talk the wife out of the biorb tank and went for this http://www.practicalfishkeeping.co.uk/pfk/...m.php?news=1090
from my lfs,
could you tell me how many fish i can have in this tank please? i will be putting around 6-7 platty fry in there as soon as its cycled
thank you

The problem with BiOrbs is that there is next to no genuine swimming space for all but the tiniest fish. If you have room for a BiOrb, you have room for an Aquacube, providing you stock sensibly. BiOrbs are VERY expensive for what they actually are.

the main problem with these kinds of tanks (seems everyone is copying the idea these days)
is lack of surface area compared to volume of water.
if one was to have the largest of these bowl type tanks, say 60ltr, and only half fill it
you would then have a good surface area to volume of water but filled up the surface area is less than adequate.

not to mention those types that are filtered from the bottom of the bowl which makes maintenance less than ideal,
there are a few that are filtered from the hood and those are a bit better, but not much.

(you'll note I've mentioned no trade names :p )

Ahh, I have a tank similar to the one your wife likes, only it's made by another company (Marineland). Those are really good for beginners; maintenance is a lot simpler and they look nicer without the heavy filters on the back.

For the 30 liter model, you could probably fit 3 platys nicely, maybe 4. I'd go for the 60 liter one so you could easily fit 6.
