Hiya,

want to get this sorted and treated quick before a disaster may strike!

I have bought 10 neon tetras today, and they have accidently give me two cardinal tetras, however i dont mind.

But one of the cardinal tetras has black dots on his body and has lost some colour of red on his belly.

please help is he normal? he is with the shoal and swimming fine and eating fine i prosume. looks fine in himself, just not in his apperence? ??

thanks x

well the tankl has been set up for 2 years about now so it should be ok.

the neon was like this right from when i got him, i got 10 of them yesterday, why would my water stats affect this?

the cardinal which looks unwell this morning has had a bit of his top fin biten but is still swimming ok and with the shoal. the only other thing i can say is he seems to be "breathing'" alot more than the others (his mouth opens and shuts more than reguarly.)

please dont say this could be ntd! :shout:

or is he just naturally like that? is that an option?

thanks x

If your water stats are significantly different to those from which the fish was bought then it could be more susceptible to disease because of stress.
Also if you have added them direct to your main/community aquarium you have possibly introduced whatever disease the fish may already have had (when you bought it) to the rest of your fish.
As it was only yesterday I'd be inclined to call up the LFS you bought them from and inform them - mine would ask you to take in a water sample (and return the fish*), if your water stats were OK then they'd take the fish back and exchange it/refund. If your water stats were bad then it'd be your loss.

I havent got my stats kit yet, ordering it of ebay.
the time i first spotted the cardinal looking funny was when i got a proper look at them when they where in the plastic bag equalising with my own water in the tank? so he must of come like that...? and the only thing in my water is that i havde changed the gravel to sand, got some live plants and put some bowood in, on the label it said to bathe for 2 weeks i bathed it for half an hour and then put it in, as it said you could put it in straight away but it would just cause a tea colour in the water, which would fade natually. and help algea to go. ? so i did that. if you tell me to have a water change, i usually do that via gravel cleaner, how would i do that with sand????

thanks x

more likely stress if its lost colour than PH. neons have been bred in more alkaline water over the years, so PH isnt really a big factor of illness anymore dependent on the species.

do you have any red cabbage?

boil it in water until you get a good strong purple coloured water, discard the cabbage and keep the cabbage water, then drop some tank water in their to indicate wether your water is accidic or alkaline. and tell us what colour it turns

Hiya,

thanks for all your replies. all have helped.

Im sorry i cant give you my ph right now, will be able to soon ;)

i have been looking closely at my cardinal, as he now desides he will come to the front with the rest of the shoal hehe.
But it looks like smears of blue down him, as if its his skin colour thats leecked???

is this possible???
i think he will be ok, the only other problems with him is that his top fin is a bit nipped, and he seems to be "breathing" a bit more than the rest.

do you think hel be ok? im beginning to hope so ... it doesnt look like little black spots or anything???

thanks x :good:

 I cant really post any good pics, iv got the camera out and they all swim and hide, just get loads of pics of nothing!

it looks really like his skin colour has smudged....is it possible?

thanks x
