Hi I've found this on my Hygrophila corymbosa, I thought it was Alge at first and was egging my Otto's on to deal with it as they seem to ensure the rest of the tank is spotless!!!.

When I did some pruning and took some of the leaves out I tried to rub the "algae" off it was actually a discolouration in the leaf, only the Hygrophila corymbosa is suffering, in the tank the leaf edges have a wavey darkened effect too.

Any Ideas?, everything else is ok, and the Hygrophila corymbosa is thriving other wise, I have around 25-20ppm CO2, 2.16wpg lighting and am using 2ml of flourish extreme daily and 10ml Tropica Plant Nutrition + spread over 3 doses per week.

black beard algae...

its a pita to get rid of

i tried scratching it off rubbing it off but instead i scratch the leaf til there is a hole it

I've seen this before in H. Corymbosa and it appears like brown dots on lower leaves which turn into holes. All the deficiency guides indicate a potassium deficiency but I've normally attributed it to low CO2 and/or low NO3. If it does look like what I've mentioned you'll need to add more CO2 and NO3. If it is a growth on the leaf then it is algae. A bit hard to tell from your photo.

Thanks, its deffo not algea on the leaf, more blaack than brown, Re the CO2 the leaves pearl like mad and I am already chucking N and P in via the tropica, the other plants are doing well, so I might get shot of the H C as it only went in to set the tank up, I fancy something a bit nicer anyway.

Heteranthera Zosterifolia is top of my list.

Thanks.

which tropica are you using.. only tropica 'plus' has N in it. Standard tropica has only K & trace.

what is your nitrate levels currently?

Hi it is tropica plant nutrition + which includes N and P, nitrate is currently <25, nitrite 0.

Getting a simular problem on some of the other leaves now too, I did a large water change (appr 40%) today and pruned back a few plants, especially those with dark edged leaves.

Not sure if it is a deficiency or an over dose??, I also seem to have something growig on the tips of my Viallis, I thought it was part of the leaf but now not sure, it looks like roots?.
