Okay my male CT betta has been laying on the bottom of the tank for about a week now, he just lays there flat. He's in a 10g tank, and has 5 black neon tetras as tank mates. They have been together for a month or two now, and get along. Does anybody have any ideas of what may be wrong with my betta?

Probably not the best tank mates, so keep an eye on them.

What are your water stats? Do you have a filter? how often do you do a water change and how much? Do you use decholorinator? Have you added anything new recently? Any other symptoms? Does he look different? Does he eat and poop?

My thought would be he may not be happy with his tank mates. How long have you had him with those tank mates. I might take him out and give him a tank of his own and see if he cheers up. Do you see him eat?

Sorry I should have added more. He has been with the tetras for a month or two. Yes I use decholorinator, I do water changes every 1-2 weeks, it has a 15g filter on it. He eats first, when he's done the tetras can eat, I haven't looked to see if his poop is normal or even if he's going, I will start paying more attention to that. Nitrates VERY low almost 0, Nitrites are 0, Ammonia 0, ph 7.6 the only thing I have added recently was a snail from one of my other tanks. He is the boss of the tank, and the tetras generally keep to themselves and don't come in his territory. The temp is 76 fahrenheit. He eats betta pellets and flakes and the occasional pea.

Hmm it is possible that he isnt happy with the tetras, what about the filter does it give a lot of water movement? Does he have any unusually spots or anything on him? Do his gills look normal? Anything other than the staying at the bottom? Does he swim normally?

Sorry for all the questions!

I took the tetras out and put some platy fry in with him in-case that was the problem. His gills do look a little funny, like they may be in-flamed, the filter does put out a strong current if the fish are at the top right, and he swims just fine.

When you say he's laying there flat, do you mean on his side, or upright? It could be a swim bladder problem.
Do you fast him at all?

It's a little odd that after a month you're getting 0 reading still. How often do you test? Any significant ammonia spikes?
Of course the neons are said to be bad tankmates with Bettas, which you already know. If they've been harassing him, he might be afraid to swim freely around the tank.
Also if the filter is strong, that little spot he lays on might be the only place he can get to in the tank that doesn't toss him around. You might consider slowing down the current. There are pinned threads at the top of the forum with links on how to do that.

By the way the tank is several months old, it has been home to a few different fish. He lays flat on his side. And he lays on the bottom all around the tank, sometimes directly underneath the filter  . I test every couple of weeks, the last trace of ammonia was when it was cycling. I did a fishless cycle, and made sure it was safe by having guppies live in for a few weeks.

He eats flakes pellets and the occasional pea. I've had him for roughly 7 months.

Okay, so the only symptoms he has is laying on his side at the bottom? Does he swim awkwardly when he's moving (or does he even swim)? Is he still eating? My guess is a swollen swim bladder, which is usually caused by overfeeding and/or constipation. You may want to try fasting him for a few days and then reduce how much you feed him daily.

He eats and swims normally no problems at all. He will be swimming just fine though and then he will just lay on his side for a little while and then start swimming again. But I'll fast him for a few days, and then feed smaller portions.

Let us know how it goes. I'm rooting for your little guy!
