maybe you're right ox. he might have been destined to die at a young age. the jd and sev were the same size (4") and there was virtually no aggression so it can't be that. even tho the tank is mature i still test every couple of days and monitor the temp so i can be pretty sure it's not that either. Anyone know where to get an ebjd that isn't imbred?

We're actually putting together a group order for some EBJD's on our local forum from one of the best known Cichlid breeders Jeff Rapps.

Google him.

Here's his site so you can see some of his livestock.

sounds like lack of oxygen to me. do you have an airstone? is the water getting churned up alot? you need gas exchange. you always lowwer the water level. the higher the temp in the tank the less O2 in the water. i have had this happen a few times. best of luck in the future.

With a lack of oxygen fish would be likely to go to the surface of the water and "gasp", not go to the bottom of the tank and hide.

thats funny cause mine became very lethargic, hardly eating, not moving much, my buttikoferi (i know its not a s.a. or c.a.) just hid in her clay pot until i found her dead at the bottom of the tank with bites in her from my air breathing polys. i guess they took advantage of her. i.m.o. it sounds like lack of oxygen.

i just did some research on Jeff Rapps. he's only about 1/2 hour from me. the place that i get my fish from stocks their cichlids from him. so something else was the problem.

As for lack of o2, i don't think so cause the severum in there is fine. the hoplos look good too but then again they breathe air too. Now i'm really confused

ummm... try adding a powerhead to break the water surface or a air pump just to be sure. this happened to an old customer of mine one time, his tank was salt water though. but it is completly plausable.
