What's This White Spot On My Betta?

Melafix and pimafix is no good on what your fish has.Melafix is only good on cuts and wounds. You can add melafix with bacterial meds. The fish has already got secondary infections and fish are hard to save when this happens, so no melafix.

Ok, thank you. After isolating the beta, are there any steps that I should take to help the main tank? Or simply watch for symptoms later?

When you say "hard to save," is this fish actually dying from this? It has had the spot for a few months, and I have yet to notice any behavioral changes. If yes, estimated life-expectancy (currently 2 years old)?

Once bacterial infections mount up the odds go down for saving the fish.
Try the med fish can surprise you at times.
For the main tank a gravel vac and a few daily water changes.
Good luck.

Wilder,

I forgot to ask an important question: How can you tell if the med is working?

If a bacterial med after 5 days the fish has not improved or healed one little bit the med not working on the fish.

It's been 5 days, and I've noticed the following:

1. I have a 1.5 gal tank. Thought it was 1 gal, thus have been under-medicating slightly.

2. His appetite has improved, but only to about 3 pellets a day. And they have to be falling to the floor, not on the surface or on the bottom... he's picky. I've tried blood worms, frozen brine shrimp, boiled pea... no luck, just pellets.

3. On day 3, the white spot looked like it was getting pale. The size was about the same, but the intense center was now matching the outer color.

4. About the same, but I can now see the extent of the finrot, as the fish now opens his fins more and swims more. Spot is still there.

--------
Today, before the 3rd dose, I did a 100% water change as the smell was getting a little *different (possibly medication, or medication wiping out water). I used the water from my main tank in order to provide healthy bacteria, etc.

I'm going to go another 5 days with the proper dosage this time ;)
Do you think supplementing w/ Melafix/Pimafix will help in the regrowth?

Thanks in advance.

Great, thank you. Should I follow these instructions:

Add one capful (10ml) per 10 gallons of water. Treat on days 1,3,and 5. Use as soon as the first signs of disease are noted. Treated water may appear cloudy at first due to the presence of the microscopic spheres; 30 minutes to 1 hour after treatment all cloudiness is gone. Maintain normal filtration and air.
------
Or do you think that a longer treatment time may be required?
------------

Thanks,
Ben

What meds did you use ? I have a fin rot problem too, bigger than your. I used Maracyn+Maracyn 2 and no luck. Now I'm using Maracyn TC.
Thanks.

Carry on with the med it can take up to two weeks even with antibiotics.
Good luck.

Thank you both.
I was just about to ask for how long should I give him TC ..... 2 weeks, OK.

PS: I gave him frozen blood worms and he is flaring at them not eating. Stupid fish is afraid of the worms.

Lol.Best not to cut meds to short it can even take longer than two weeks, even if a fish is improving best to treat longer to make sure the bacterial desease has been completely gotten rid of, if cut the meds to short it can all flare up again.

if the fins start to go jagedy/discoloured at the edges a good fin rot treatment is melafix available from any half desent aquatic store, safe with the biological filter as it is natural. but remover the charcoal from the filter as this will take the antiboitics out of the water.
oh and the melafix is a good infection prevention to all other fish.
hope this helps but im not an expert, i just give the basic imformation that i know.
good luck

I'm about 3 weeks into treatment, and I have now noticed a remarkable difference in my betta's attitude, appetite and appearance; however the white spot is still there. I am beginning to wonder if the white spot is a patch of dead cells that simply never tore to form a hole in the fin. It looks as if it has slightly improved, but I can not say to be certain.

The 2 fins underneath the fish have begun to grow back dramatically, and his tail fin now spreads more (instead of looking wilted). Does this mean that he is 100% better? Or just in those areas?

When should I stop treating the fish (Maracyn + Melafix + Pimafix)? At 3 weeks into it, do I need to gradually reduce the dosage and ween the fish off?

I am doing water changes every 5-7 days prior to Maracyn to allow it to work as long as possible.
