This type is spreading across the sand really quickly. Ive been removing as much as i can because it sticks to the sand and makes it look ugly.

blue green algae, do a search and you'll find a more concise answer but a 4 day black out will kill it, its then up to you to rectify the problem that caused it usually low flow and build up of waste or low NO3 levels.
 
Yep BGA, easy to kill with a complete black out of the tank. But as Gareth says, you'll need to sort the reason for it happening if you dont want it to come back. People tend to find it starts in areas where there is low current or 'dead spots'.

Tape up the edges of your tank with black insulating tap such that light does not enter the side of the substrate.
