just wondering if anyone can tell me what the smallest sized tank would be for breeding? also, how do i know when to put the girlie in there? any other tips on breeding would be great
first one coming up yay hehe
Personally I've bred successfully in a 2.5 gallon, a 5 gallon and a 10 gallon, though I prefer the 5 gallon, they're not so confined that the female can't hide, but they don't have so much room that the male can never find the female.
When you first put the pair in the tank the male will be loose in the tank and the female will be in a floating cup or a chimney, somewhere where the male can see her but not get to her. Once the male has a nice sized bubblenest and the female is all barred up and flaring back and interested and floating a bit nose down, fins clamped (a sign of submission) thats when you let her in. From there it can take anywhere from a couple of hours to a couple of days for them to start wrapping, then once they start wrapping it can take a couple hours before the female releases any eggs. One she stops releasing eggs when they wrap and the male starts chasing her around that means its time to take her out.
do alot of research. if you haven't read, you aren't ready to breed, they're not like guppies - they're alot harder to breed.
