Whats The Definition Of A High Tec Planted Tank

Not necessarily.

I may be corrected but I don't think a high tec tank needs high lighting or EI

I would categorise a high light tank as:

Medium Light upward >2WPG
Pressurised CO2 Injection
Fertilisers added.

I don't think it needs to be EI as that is just a method used for your fertilising.

ok well i've got 3.6 watts per gallon but thats if not including displacment by rocks etc so i guess it must be 4 watts per gallon. pressurised co2 and add seachem ferts....... so im high tec am i

I doubt adding rocks will increase the Wattage in your tank.

It is WPG as general rule because tanks are generally a similar shape, as in most are rectangular boxes that are longer than higher. Taking half the tank water away will not double your WPG.

For me, the definition of a high tech tank is £500 hole in my arse pocket!

Dave.

Can't be Dave

I've spent that since Crimbo and I only have 2 nutrafins and no pressurised. lol

lol ok i thought water displacement counted cause the light would have less water to fight through but a depth of ten inches will always be the same what ever the displacement

To me a defintion of a high-tech tank is:

A nutritional substrate
3WPG +
CO2 20-30ppm
Fertilisers added regulary
Normally demanding plants
Good filter

A high-tech tank in no way has to use EI, I consider my setup "high-tech" and I use the "mlawson method", basically I add lots of different fertilisers when I feel like it and carry out regular water changes, I still have high light and high CO2.

That term came about in response to Dupla about 25 years ago or more.
They had a high tech approach vs the soil and non cO2 methods before.

Dupla acts like they get all the credit for adding CO2 to tanks in the hobby, I have references for DIY yeast CO2 for the hobby from 1963.

But Dupla did bring gas tanks to the hobby in a big marketed way.

I think if you base your criteria on that standard:

CO2 fertilization of any sort is the demarkation point here.
I would still place Excel etc in the low tech methods.

Think about the difference in methods between non CO2 and CO2 methods, they are quite different in terms of growth rate.
