What's The Best Way To Keep Sand Clean (read!)

my sand in my aquarium has gotten very dirty and i was wondering what the best way was to keep it clean. any suggestions?

Do you do regular weekly stirring/raking of the sand (very lightly) and then siphon the top layer of dirt off ?

well, the tank is relatively new and so is the sand and the sand is a bit dirty. i'm about to clean it out and thought i'd ask which method of cleaning the sand is best.

I use a normal siphon gravel cleaner but I move it round in little circles to create a whirlpool effect - this lifts the muck off the surface of the sand and any sand that gets sucked up soon settles again.

I use a (clean) beer syphon tube and do as 'chickenlady'... a cm above the sand is still close enough to the surface to suck up dirt but leave sand down...
