I think i have whitespot in my tank has one of my platies had 2 white dots on her today, and 2 other fish have been flicking the gravel the past few days,so i've treated the tank with interpet 6,anyway on checking the fry i noticed 2 of the month old fry were flicking the side of the tank,so now i've treated the small tank also!

Anyway i think i may have spread it by use of the catching net,i have 3 nets different sizes but i have used them for both tanks,i do wash them off with warm water after use,but is this enough to sterilise them against diseases?
Otherwise i can't work out how i got whitespot in both tanks unless its transfered from the mother to the fry or by use of the nets??

I noticed in the lfs they keep all nets in a bucket of what looks like water.
Any ideas?,how do you keep your nets clean?

I keep mine clean by rinsing it off in sink water (I have chlorine-free tap water so this is okay) never presented a problem for me. :)

most LFS's use a dip solution usually made up from a number of treatments, i.e. parasite, bacterial and fungus treatments,

Soaking in boiling tap water and then completely drying them out should really be enough though, if your only using them now and again

I often boil my test tubes from the test kit but I've also wondered about the nets. Makes sense to boil them if you know that there is a disease in the tank. How about a cyphon and hose?

I've done it probably 3 times over 6 months. I don't know if that is concidered often but each time I did it was after a treatment for disease in one tank and didn't want to spread to other tank. I would expect that they could be boiled to get rid of built-up residue. Have you had problems with boiling them? I guess I just figured it would be OK.

when glass is hot and is cooled quickly it will cause stresses when it shrinks causing it to crack

I let them boil for a minute and leave them to cool in the pot. So no quick cool down. Have you had any break from doing it? Is rinsing them thoroughly after each use enough to keep them residue free? I really don't want to start breaking tubes.

rinsing is enough

Thanks

I will soak the nets in hot water after use then let them dry.

The nets are mainly used to catch fry etc,so they are used between the 2 tanks

Whitespot cant survive in dry conditions so just make sure the net dries out before using it in another tank. Even better, have different nets for different tanks, then at least you don't have any cross contamination.
