What's that smell!!?

Last friday I was changing the water in my 29 gallon and got that same putrid smell when I lifted out a fake rock. This particular rock is hollow inside and has little holes in the bottom (about the size of a pea). The entire kitchen smelled like a sewage treatment plant.

(I change the water and stir the sand at least once a week.)

I removed the rock (for good) and did a big water change and everything smells good again (that really nice clean, fishy smell).

I think there was probably air trapped in the rock along with food or poop, etc.

Anyway, beware of those fake rocks!

Hi fishfight :)

Unless you have been neglecting the cleaning of your tank, the smell is probably coming from your African Clawed Frog. They do have a certain distinct odor about their tanks that normal fish only tanks do not have, although unless the water is being stirred up you shouldn't notice it.

Now please throw that can of Frog Bites away and get him some real food before he starves. Frog Bites, which are hardly bigger than poppy seeds are for feeding tiny African Dwarf Frogs, not the ones you have. Your frog needs to eat some hearty foods like live or frozen worms, freeze dried tubifex worms, or little feeder fish. Mine will jump up and catch shrimp pellets when I drop them in front of their faces. It will take a little practice to get them to go at just the right angle that their eyes see the movement, but it's fun to watch them do this.

ACFs should not be kept together with fish, because they will eventually eat them. Also, because their natural habitat is still water, they should not be in a tank with a filter on it. The vibrations bother them. Do be very sure to keep a very well fitted cover on your tank at all times. They are excellent jumpers and are likely to escape through any opening they can find. If they do this and dry out they will probably die.
