Perhaps some sort of chemical got into the water on the day of the water change either put in by the water company or by some other means!

No, i'm pretty sure it's an internal bacteria infection and not a chemical posioning.

Yeah, i've treated the tank and the fish that are still alive (2 pitbull plec's, 2 peppered cories and 2 platties) are all acting normal - so fingers crossed for them!!
