I need some help. A little over a month ago i added 9 rasboras to my 29 gallon tank that had completed a fishless cycle. They all appeared fine for the first few weeks, I was surprised to find them even spawning on a weekly basis after they were fed bloodworms. All of a sudden one fish died, my wife found him stuck to the filter while i was at work. He seemed to be isolated alot while the other fish stayed together. A few days ago i noticed another one isolating himself also. Now the top half of his tail fin is missing! Must be the other fish picking on him now? And just now I noticed another isolating himself in the corner. The water quality seems to be good. I just tested - ammonia 0, nitrite 0, and nitrate less than 20. The one thing i noticed is what appears to be a brown algae growing on the rocks and plants and starting to spread. What is this? Is this part of the problem? Can anyone help?

i have heared this alot mate.
you are not the only one who has had a problem with this.

firstly the brown algae is normally what appears in new tanks an d normally indicate the presence of high phosphates and/or nitrates.it is harmless.

now this tail thing may be fin rot.
your going to need to do some big water changes if his is fin rot.
google fin rot for more on this.
and you will need to treat with a antibiotic,as it is bacteria that causes this to happen.
also while trating it is wise to do waterchanges too,to remove the remaining bacs from the water.

keep an eye on the others too.
is it just rasboras in the tank?

have you had anyother infections or infestations in the last few weeks?

yeah, just the rasboras. I haven't noticed any other infections.
does it look like the fin is rotting?nything that looks like cotton wool?
anyother secondary infections on the fish?

are the fish getting along with each other?

is the tail getting worse?

It does look like there is a small tear in the lower part of his tail fin now. But other than that everything else appears normal. I don't see anything that looks like cotton, that is. All the fish get along well.

I'm keeping an eye on the other one that is isolating himself. He doesn't seem to have any signs of fin rot or infections... yet.

if i were you i would do a good water change, also vacuum the gravel reallywell too.
bacteria will mostly be effecting the fish before the other symptoms start.

keep an eye out for fin nipping too,i would treat for fin rot just in case.
also note that it is rare fin rot takes the whole tank at once,it occurs mostly in 2-3 fish at any one time.

hence why i am concened about the isolation.

Hmmm... thanks for all the help. It actually shocks me to see this happening. I've been very careful with the water condition. I made sure the tank was fully cycled before adding the fish (it took forever!) and I do at least 10% water changes weekly, while vacuuming the gravel. Tomorrow is my scheduled water change anyway, so i guess i'll just change a little more water and vacuum thoroughly.

dont forget to treat the cause too.
.environment 1st
.anti biotiotics 2nd
use a bacteria friendly meicine if poss.
