Hey everyone, im new here, first post ever! Woot woot!
Anyways, heres my problem that im hoping you guys can help me out with.
Im trying to breed my guppies and platies, and for some reason it isnt working! Here is what I have, I have 2 male platies (one I just purchased two days ago, cuz the other one wasnt getting it done) the one male that I have had I think is an orange moon platy? Not sure though, and I have had him for a year and a half along with a blue female platy, also have had in the same tank for a year and a half. They have paired off and share all their time together, yet, I have NEVER had babies from her.... ever! She is large, and im talking, the biggest platy I have ever seen! Anyways, I just purchased 2 more females, probably about a month ago. The sunset platy looks pregnant, but im thinking it was previously mated with, as I ever never seen the male around her, and the other one is a rainbow platy, and the orange moon HATES her! He aggressivly attacks her, whenever she is around "his" blue female, so I went and got another male platy yesterday, and of course, he stole the blue female away from the orange male, although the orange male hasnt been attacking him or anything. I watched the new male court the female and mate with her, so im hoping for babies. But yet, the new male doesnt want anything to do with the rainbow female either! Ahh.
As for the guppies, I have a 2 year old female guppy, again, NO babies from her. She has shown signs of pregnancy before, but never have seen any babies, eating them all maybe? You'd think at least one would live. Anyways, I think she is getting too old to have babies now, so I purchased a new female 2 days ago, so im hoping for babies there. But seriously, whats the deal? I've had them for SO long and yet no babies!

The set up is as fallows: 10g (used to be in 55g, but put different fish in there) gravel on bottom with accent stones (for babies to hide when first born) 2 fake plants, breeder grass, a cave, and some rock work, with little caves in there too. Plenty of places for babies to hide! The temperature is at 76 degrees.

Whoops, I think i accidentally replied my own post haha... im still unsure how to use this site yet. Oh and I had another question also... if my sunset platy is pregnant... in like 2 days her belly got pretty big, and it turned really white, and towards the back is red, will that turn black if she is pregnant? This is all so new to me, sorry!

hi,
have you got more male than female platy then?
the fry seem to have lots of hiding places, have you seen any of the females gravid spots?
i know with mine if one is being harrased she will abort.

Ahh this is confusing, there are two reply buttons, which one do I use, I just used the top one...\
Anyways, there are 2 males and 3 female platies, I was thinking about taking the one male out cuz he wont leave the blue female alone! And I already saw them mate, so maybe he doesnt need them anymore.
I dont see any gravid spots on any of the females, but my sunset female, like I said got really fat and where the gravid spot would be, it is red there, so will that turn black when she gets closer to birthing them? Or is she just fat? I wouldnt think that she would be the only one getting fat, and none of the other ones, so idk, maybe she is pregnant.

if the female platies are getting pregnent then its most likely that the babies are becomming food for them or any other fish in the tank.. what else do you have in there?

I have 3 guppies in there and a pleco, along with my platies. I do have some sort of tetra in there as well, its very small, smaller than the platies... he's a loner and doesnt swim with them much, plus hes more of a top swimmer, likes to swim towards the top, I dont know what kind he is cuz someone gave him to me. But I was kind of thinking that maybe they could of been eating them, but wouldnt at least ONE live? My friend has a female guppy that gave birth and 2 of hers lived and she has black skirt tetras and red finned sharks and some bueno aries type fish in with them... its not fair lol... she didnt even care or know hers gave birth, and here im trying my darndest... PLUS her waterlevel is at half tank, her filter isnt running, there is crap everywhere in her tank and she keeps the light off 24/7... and she STILL gets babies! Ahhh...

lol. Thats life :p

Some people look at me and also wonder how my fish are still alive with the kind of stock I have

Maybe her tank has better places for the babies to hide. Platies are usually very active hunters of their own babies and guppies are not.

Yeah, she does have alot of "stuff" in there, im suprised her fish can even swim around. I also have a 55gallon with some various fish such as.... 1 baby oscar, 2 blindcave fish (giving to me) a giant danio, a zebra danio, a pleco, a banjo catfish, 2 black finned sharks, a silverdollar and an african clawed frog... and YES I know that the oscar will proably eat the smaller fish when it gets bigger, but... whadya do, the small fish were givin to me, and I informed them of the possible eating of there fish from my bigger ones!

So I guess another 10Gallon setup is due, to probably put the females in, if I notice they are pregnant... which im sure my BF wont like cuz we have enough tanks of every sort set up LOL... oh well!
