ok im getting a 125 gallon tank in a month and im wondering what to put in there.

ive thought of 2 options

1. make a community south american set-up (planted),2 angelfish, 2 rams, 6-8 corys, 1 pleco, 20 or so large tetras and mabie a gourami.

2. a rocky african set up with small to medium sized cichlids-dont kno a lot about african species so would have to do reserch.

so what would you do? any other ideas are welcomed also...(apart from a betta breeding colony) :)
cheers

I really (personally) like your first option. I have something similar :good: ;)

Keep a tank to see how many different types of animals/species you can fit in there! Put in lots of small fish like danios and tetras so that you have large schools including hatchet fish so the top of the tank doesnt look empty, a large peacfull vegetarian fish like a common pleco, some african dwarf frogs, amano shrimp, ghost shrimp, a camaroon armoured shrimp, some apple snails(ones that dont eat plants) and some corydoras all in a planted tank with sand for the substrate. Thats what i would do  . Out of your two options i like the sound of the planted south american setup :) .

cheers for replys,

asian type sounds interesting wouldnt the barbs nipp the gouramis though? african frog thats a different idea, and i have thought about shrimps-need to resurch. as for snails  no way, ive got some little ones in my tank now and i remove them all the time(came in with plants)-thinking about it this is quite crewl. i kill snails almost everyday...and i claim to be an animal lover :/ those poor snails.

my first option is probley the one i will go with. i love angels and always wanted to keep rams. and a nice school of tetras and corys are great. Although i have seen some great pics of african setups-if i get another tank(3rd) thats what ill get.

oh gosh.... my dream... and you... have... it... coming

okay, so basically, I'd do the tetra tank. But beware! Angels won't probably like tetras....

So here are two options I might suggust....

A: 30x Cardinal Tetra, 30x Glow Light Tetra, 7x Roseline Shark/Red comet barb (these dudes are literally like large tetra. Peaceful, calm, nice... gt to 6" and doesn't feast on smaller fish).

Now... you want some big bottom dwellers for this option? Go with some clown loach, reaching 8", they'll love your tank. I don't think they eat smaller fish either (although i could be wrong. contradicitions, please, do point out.). i suggust starting out with 5x small ones. And thus, the tank seems complete, except for a few things you may personally want to add. I believe, with 120 gallons here, you have room for 1 or 2 more schools of your choice of tetra, such as rummy nose or lemon tetras. Also, khuli loaches are fun!

Opt: B

Like angel fish do you? this is a larger option of my own second choice consideration....

120 - so go with 2x Angels, 1x Senegal Bichir, 1x pleco (common?)

This is where i usually get stuck on anything else i'd want to add... hrm... but wait! what's this?

7x roseline shark. These guys are peaceful and work in this tank as well! at 6", the senegal shouldn't try to eat your roseline buddies, and they're like giant tetra when viewing, except even more exotic! No records of fin nipping. there fore.... your angels should be safe.

And, unlese you're getting a really really young senegal, get 4" clown loaches for the bottom! they work in this tank too!

so, overview

Tank A:
30x Cardinal tetra, 30x Glow Light tetra, 7x Roseline shark (Red comet barb), 5x clown loach, and that should leave room for one or two schools of 10x terta a school of your choice :D! Maybe khuli loaches even?

Tank B:
2x Angel Fish, 1x Senegal Bichir, 1x common plec, 5x clown loach (4"+), 7x Roseline shark.

I personally like tank A more... but go with what you want! People want big fish, and i think the clown loach and roselines will work. Still not sure on the eating small fishes on clowns....

im loving ure input gankutsuou!,

some interesting ideas there. i agree in a nicly planted tank loads od schooling tetras are the way to go.

for me though angels are a must there midwater largeish cool looking fish. my plan is to get 6 or so young angels and wait till 2 pair off, and im hoping if they are kept with the smallish tetras from young they will be used to them and not eat them when they are bigger(thats a plan neway)

some of the fish you mentioned there i havnt hered of before, eg roseiline shark and senagil birchir ill look them up.

cheers for reply

for the mid/upper level fish, it'd be the shoal of Roseline sharks. Seriously. 6" fish. I guess cardinals aren;t supposed to fin nip, but not sure on glow lights. the only report i've EVER seen on a glo light fin nipping is on a neon tetra... and that could be false....

seriously. just google "Roseline Shark" or image it. You can find some pics that may intrest ya :D

You'll need quite abit of money for 6-8 of them! In UK the cheapest i've seen them was about £18 each I think.

yer i saw a site when i was googlin them sellin at 40 dollars each :( . and there probley quite rare ive never seen them in my lfs. if i do see them and there 15 pound each mabie ill get 4 and see how they do.
i agree though they r expensive

I've seen these go online as low as $18, but it's never adviseable to have them shipped by mail....
in one of MY LFS i've seen them at $32 us dollars. I bet i could get discounts some way. But yes, They are fully worth it. Just save up  .

I've got 6 of them, and they are a beautiful mid level group. First 3 cost me £18, second 3 £11. About 3-4 inches (had the elder ones 1yr, younger ones 9 months) at the moment.

Look wonderful shoaling together, especially if they get spooked- they go real tight and shoot off down the tank. Not huge personalities though- not like clown loaches. Get on well with everything- they don't eat or nip other fish, and they are too damn quick for anything else to get near. Try netting an adult one of these, you're there all day lol

My tank wouldn't be the same without them.
