Ok, a question for all who read this thread. I'm interested in both advanced and beginners answers alike.

Please state with your answer how long you have been in the hobby.

If you had to start a brand new fresh water aquarium and had roughly £1000 to do it to completion, what would you buy. I want to know the brands and types and if possible, why.

My motive is to learn from you, the forum user, in an attempt at perfecting my next project which I hope to start in the winter

ah very good question whisper, aqua clear, stresscoat, lees that for now ill tell u more when i remember

150g aquaium, sump filter, good lights

fish wise i would do some discus and some nice big cichilds. and some zebra plecs

First of all check for used aquariums. When you find the right deal you save tons of money that you can then invest in fish and products/maintenance.
I like to go with tow canister filters for the extra filtration and having a backup if one fails.
Also could go with 2 heaters of lesser strenght if one doesnt turn off it wont cook the fish.

You didnt realy talk about about size or if you wanted a planted tank etc... so It's kinda hard to know.

I have been in the hobby for 9 years. I would personally buy a 200g tank. 3 60 marienland filters, and i 30 filter. Then, i would put in a 600wt heater. The i would but a 4 ft long piece of bogwood with holes ever 4 uinches. Then i would put in a 3inch layer of river cobbles stones. Then i would put in 35 amazon sword plants. I would stock it with 12 male kribs, and 12 female kribs. Then i would put in a school of 30 lemon tetras. And after that i would put in 25 albino corries.

Tank (from maidenhead aquatics, half price, i think it's around £450 With cabinet)

Rena 120l x 70.5h x 40.5w (included: rena filstar xp2, heater, air pump)

That leaves you with £550 to spend on all the meds you need and fish, i'd go for a community with rainbows, angels, swordtails, and a couple of sino's, plus whatever else you wanted.

Edit: Marble hatchets!!!! :good:

by the way what is your next project? I been in the hobby for about 6-7 yrs total

ok with £1000

--- I would get a brand new tank made for me, a 60x24x24 which would cost me about £250 all-in

--- I would either build a stand or buy one from somewhere, costing me approx £100

--- I would get a starter unit and a 48" Bulb, that would cost about £40 all-in

--- I would get x2 Eheim 2028's brand new with media for a total cost of about £250

--- I would get x2 200W heaters at a cost of £30

--- I would get sand, probably about 50kg or so, at a cost of £25

--- I would get x3 Ornatus Birchirs at about 8" for a total cost of £75

--- I would get x3 Palmas Bichirs at about 8" for a total cost of £75

--- I would get x4 (as of yet not decided on) Cichids for a total cost of about £60

--- I would spend the remaining £90-100 on bog wood

--- Then i would go over the £1000 for frozen food and water conditioner

I've been in the hobby for 2 years and I would buy a 115 gallon with sand and rocks and fake plants ect. I'd stock it with platies, bleeding heart tetras, panda corys, and 2 female blue dwarf gouramis. (I may have over stocked my tank. I tend to get carried away with stocking tanks  ) :good:

sounds good, i was tempted to go the Discus route with my £1000 and fully planted co2 but i think predatory fish hold my interest right now!!!! good move with the neons though, it if twas discus my set up and soft water i would with loads of neons or cardinals, lots of rummy nosed tetras and some cory

hey you could do a lot more with a 115 gallon, i have a 70 gallon community and i have about 150 community fish in it, about 10-12 different types.
