Ok, i was wondering just a few mins ago, what would be worst for my fish (hope niether happen).
A) If the thermostat broke, and the temps raised above 30c (or even more)
B ) If the heater broke and temps went 18c or below.
Id think that A would caused most fatalities.

a would be worst as the water would heater much quicker than usual and most fish adapt better to cooler water then boiling water....

if the heater breaks, the water will take some time to get to room temp and most fish will be able to survive a short period in cooler water

Yeah, a would be worse, the lowest the water would go is room temp. which isn't too bad if you are sensible and have heating on this time of year. The fish would just slow down, like in the wild when ponds freeze over.
