I have a cold water tank with two newts, 2 pond snails, 1 mosquito fish, and 5 ghost shrimp(maybe six), I am thinking about getting a couple khuli loaches to eat the snails when they start multiplying but not sure if the khulis will eat snails. anybody know??? also will khuli's live in a cold water environment. I looked in the fish index and it didn't say anything about temp. I assume the answer is no but they are such cool little fish I had to ask anyway. If khuli loach is a no is there any other small fish that will eat snails and can live in a cold tank? thanks a lot

Khulis are strictly tropical.

i can't think of any but why not just remove the snails instead, it's not like there pretty in any way.

yes they are. i like them and if i can't get anything to eat them i will use the lettuce in a cup trick and pull them out. putting back what i want

the french eat sanils but i'm not sure they like cold water or any water for that matter.

that's a good idea. Do you think the newts will eat them. I've read in here that just about anything will eat a snail if it's shell is smashed first. One problem. I kinda want the shells from the old snails in tact as I think they would make an attractive addition to the substrate in the tank. Two questions about this. Will the snail shell substrate disturb the ph by messing with hardness. second is there any way to easily remove the snails form there shells without damaging the shells then I could just dump the snail back in and he'd get eaten right?

Not really a cold water fish that will eat them, I'd just pluck them out if I where you.

My son keeps newts [ Dwarfs a member here] , I had gotten some unwanted snails [ small ones ]on some plants a few months ago , he put them in some of his tanks including the tank with the eastern green newts , no snails have been found in this tank lately , no eggs either , the other tanks all have snails :( .
We've never seen them eat snails but are pretty sure they did .
How long have you had the shrimp with the newts ?
His newts have also eaten crickets , small ones , and might even eat shrimp  .

Shrimp may also eat small snails :) .

I read on another forum that Malayan trumpet snails [ a more tank friendly snail ] will eat other types of snail .

I also read some botia loaches may be able to tolerate room temps , can't remember where I read it though .

Yeah I got a bit of advice from dwarf earlier on the topic he was very helpful. The newts have not shown any interest in the snails as of yet but the ghost shrimp seem to be disapearing(btw I got the shrimp as tank cleaners and feeders, so no worries about them being eaten). I'm gonna go get some cricket's tommorrow to see if the newts will eat them.

hmm I really don't want all of the snails to die. I like to watch them move around the tank it's lotsa fun. but how can i keep the newts from eating all of them. I don't want them erradicated just maintained?

edit: i guess the best way to do this is to simply pull them out on some lettuce rather than get something to eat them
