What Water To Use?

The systems with a water heater with tap water kept under pressure, heated, and used only as tap water is generally safe to use, as long as the water heater is properly maintained. I have this sort of system, and have been using heated water for years, without a problem. I do large water changes, 50 to 80%, on tanks that are 80F to 84F. Using cold tap water which is 50F or less with water changes of that amount would be a bad idea.
That's the system I've got, though my water changes are more in the range of 40% except for my betta juvies and fry, who get as much water changed as I can take out without leaving them high and dry :p. I use warm water with my changes and haven't had a problem with it.

That's the system most often used in the US, as far as I have ever seen. The others are commonly found in the UK, as for other countries, I haven't a clue as to what is common.

Everyone I know personally, as opposed to online, has this system, and uses it to heat water for water changes. I have yet to hear of any problems, and I am sure many don't go through the trouble of shutting off & draining the water heater every 6 months.

I boil a kettle and add it to the bucket of cold tapwater before adding the dechlorinator.
So far no problems. We've just had a new hot water tank fitted so I'm very reluctant to use the hot water because of the potential for contamination.

There is a calculator on the PFk website that can work out how much boiling water you will need to add
