What Type Of Algae Is This?

Hello,

I've recently had an investation of a very aggressive quick growing algae and I'm unsure about the best course of action to rid this demon from my tank. I have attached some images in hope that someone may be able to identify the cuprit.

I have my light on from 8:00 - 12:00 and then from 18:00 - 10:30 so a total of 8 1/2 a day and it is not in any direct sunlight.

I water change 30-35% every 2-3 weeks.

My Phosphate levels are about 2.5 mg/l, which is rather high.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

looks like some kind of filamentous algae. The main causes are low c02, nutrients and ammonia spikes.

according to James's algae guide, its quite difficult to get rid of. Do you use Flourish excel or Easycarbo?

Hello Ianho,

I agree, it does look a lot like filamentous algae.

In order to combat the low CO2 problem I have turned off an oxygen bubbler and added a Nutrafin CO2 kit. Would this help?

I haven't heard of Flourish Excel or Easycarbo, what do these products do?

With regard to adding treatments, I have to be careful as I have a Mormyrid within the tank who is sensitive to most treatments.
