I have 2 Jewel cichlids at around 2" big and they stay together rubbing on each other even. They are even showing some bright red on their faces and one is getting orange colour showing up, I have read that normally 'orange colours' is a sign of breeding colours and it also says on the article that the male would be really aggressive to the female trying to like seduce her. The one that is showing the most red and orange colours is bigger than the other jewel and can be a bit aggressive to the other but they are hanging around in certain places like the cave and back of the rocks.

Since I have given in the Johanni cichlid the tank has become more peaceful and the Jewels have been more aggressive but they are not staying in certain location like they are defending a certain place 'where the eggs would be' if you get what I mean. Would this be the start of the spawning stage where they are still looking for a place to spawn? I just want to be ready if anything does happen and to make sure that I do have a tank setup for the fry. It also says on that article that you are not likely to know they are spawning but only till you see the swimming fry.

Does anyone know what triggers them to spawn e.g. certain food, temp or drop in water temp all so sudden? at what size is it when they are mature?

I can put on pictures if it helps?? :)

Thanks stang1 I will have a look at it now :D

Thnks that was really helpful and I know now when the female is likely to agree with spawning when she turns bright red. Not sure if one is deffinite male & female but they hang around a lot with each other. Ok time to examine the fish ;)
