I have read that your pregnant guppie can stress out and sometimes die when shes been placed in a breeding trap/net. What are the chances of this? Is there anyway to make it less stressful for the female? Would you use a breeding net, or something else? I am worried that the fry will get eaten by the 7 other guppies in my tank. Would you let the female have the fry in the tank and then move the babies into the breeding net? Could I even place the female into a seperate tank by herself to give birth? Like once I know she is in fact pregnant move her, then once she has her fry move her back to the other tank? Im very confused as what too do, i dont want to stress my guppies so much that they die. Any imformation back would be great. Thank you
Please remember that guppies have 30 or more fry, every 4-6 weeks, whilst they are still in contact with a male, and for about 6 months after their last contact.
If you try to save every single fry, you will soon have more fish than you have space for.
Mother Nature, it seems to me, has things planned out pretty good. Guppies have tons of fry, on the expectation that the majority of them will die before maturity. It is not unheard of for the female to drop a fry, and then turn straight round and eat it.
It is wrong, in my view, to project our mammalian instinct to care for all offspring until maturity, onto a species which does not have the same instinct.
I appreciate that some people find it very difficult to resist doing so, which is fair enough, so please ask yourself - what are you going to do with the 30 or so fry that you will get each month? Do you have adequate tank space for them all? Do you have a reliable outlet that will take that quantity of fry regularly?
If you've answered no to these questions, then I think it would be best to leave the female(s) in the tank, and let nature take its course. The chances are that a few fry will survive to adulthood, just like in the wild.
