I just got a 44gal hex tank and would like something different from my community tank. Was thinking of some african cichlids, can anyone give me some info on them? Good ones to start with? How large they get any other important info I might need to know?
I'm planning on using sand as a subtrate as well.

Id rule out Mbuna just from hearing its a Hex tank which usually dont have the length to accomedate for Mbuna and Malawi species but I could be wrong.

How about some Tangs or Kribs?.

Again length and width of the tank would be a nice starting point

Yep, nothing in there now, not even set up yet.

I'd have to get the actual mesurments.
Are all Cichlids sw fish? I just thought they were pretty. Haven't decided if I have the funds or patients for a sw tank.

Yes Im sure all are Freshwater but will have to watch the sizes and compatability as CIchlids can be agressive. List your tank specs when you get it and what fish you would like, then people may be able to help you choose some fish.

Ok,
H is 25 inches,
Two back corner sides are 23 inches each and three front sides are 13 1/2 each.

I would like something that's not going to get huge, but maybe 2-5 inches, colourful, and I don't want them tearing each other apart.
Dont HAVE to be Cichlids, just thought that would be something different from my tetras and guppies and such.

dwarf cichlid pair is really your only choice out of cichlids any way

hmmm, any other suggestions? Something beyond usual tetras and livebearers?
I saw those Kribs, those wouldn't be too bad... but I don't know.

Google search Tanganyikan Cichlids. They have some really exciting smaller cichlids in that lake that should work for your tank :good:

Cool. Will look at those. Is there any way to ensure the LFS has them labeled correctly as dwarf species? Don't want to end up having a giant.

take a picture and post it here!! or if you know someone that's really knowledgeable (not just claim they are) see if they will go with you. I would go with someone if they wanted help picking fish out :)

lol well it's quite a drive up to Ontario from SD... I don't really know anyone who's really into fish. I know a couple of people at two LFS, so hopefully they'll not steer me wrong when I go looking.

lol, well it really is lovely up here.

was at my lfs getting a filter and heater, and started talking about sw tanks again ... I'm so confused, I don't know if it's worth doing a sw tank with only 44 gallons.... I think it's too much for me right now, but they had some beautiful sw fish there.
