Hi I've got a 10 gallon community going right now and recently I had 2 losses, My Dwarf Gourami for no apparent reason became weak and then died, and my algae eater developed holes in his sides and died, well I waited for about a month to see if anything else was going to happen and the only thing thats happened is one of the fruit loop tetras has developed a tumor on her lip but I dont think its life threatening since she's had it for about 3 weeks and the only thing thats happend is she's gotten fatter from me over feeding  . Anyways I was wondering what small oddball I could put in there, I was thinking some sort of goby but realised they are brackish and I was looking at the freshwater puffers but my LFS doesnt sell them. Any help would be appreciated. Oh my stocking is 2 golden barbs, 2 fruit loop tetras, 1 diamond tetra, and 1 painted glass fish. Again any help is appreciated. I was thinking that once i start breeding my killies that I would put a male in there but then I was thinking I want something new and different.

This is a bit of a tangent, but you do realise the fruit-loop tetras and painted glassfish are not just artificial but cruel? There's a good chance the "tumour" your fruit-loop tetra has is lymphocystis, and at least one scientific study carried out by vets in the UK demonstrated that lymphocystis is more common in dyed fish than undyed fish.

Please don't buy any more of these fishes. All it does is encourage a dispicable practise that results in pain and premature death. In the UK dyed fish are very rarely traded, and all the best stores simply won't carry them. I haven't seen dyed glassfish for years.

Anyway, glassfish should really be in groups of 3 or more. The more you have, the braver they are, and in groups of 6 or more, they become positively bullish, throwing their weight around at feeding time and chasing one another when they get bored. I like glassfish a great deal. So adding a few undyed glassfish would be a nice idea.

Fruit-loop tetras are black widow tetras, notorious fin-nippers. On no account add anything slow moving or with trailing fins (e.g. a gourami) as it will very likely be nipped, and thereby stressed, which can easily lead to disease and death.

Personally, with a tank as small as 10 gallon, you're better off making it a single species aquarium and concentrating on something challenging. It's too small to be satisfying community tank because you really can't keep that many fish. A colony of killifish or rare livebearers (like dwarf halfbeaks) would be one idea, as would a pair of dwarf puffers, if you can find some.

Cheers,

Neale

Yes I do test for nitrate, nitrite, and ammonia and all are good. And yes I did realize that the fruit loop tetras and painted glass fish are dyed and I didnt buy them, my sister did as a present. I think what I'm going to do at the time being is theres this beautiful female betta at my LFS that I'm going to get to put in there, Yes I do have bettas so i know what I'm doing. Thanks for all the help though you did make me seem like an idiot

Your betta won't thank you for being put in a tank with black widow tetras (fruit-loop tetras). Those are notorious fin-nippers, and your female betta will merely end up a swimming buffet. Why not simply add more glassfish or something, to build up the schools of fish you already have? Trust me, a group of glassfish will be plenty entertaining, as they constantly squabble with one another.

Cheers,

Neale
