What to feed.

Hey All!


I bought some new fish. I have now 1 red fin shark and 2 otocinclus affinis in my tank. They seemed to have settled in well. Just wanted to ask one question:

What's the best diet for the otocinclus? [ I know they're algae eaters but just like to make sure]

Do they eat normal fish flakes or is it best to feed them something else?

Some advice would be great!

Congratulations!

Because of the shape of them I would not reckon they would eat flakes. Maybe try plec tablets or algae wafters, they are really good for fish with sucking mouths.

Where can you buy these plec tablets and algae wafers from?

How often should they be fed?

In england I chose pleco wafers. I feed my Algae eaters a wafer once every two days depending on how much stuff needs to be eaten in the tank first. If you look at my sig you can see what I've got. My advice would be to feed them one every couple of days as it takes my fish a day to eat a wafer!

I just got mine from my lfs, and as you are also in the UK you should be able to get them no problem too. I have Hikari Algar wafers and King British plecostomus tablet food. Good thing about these, especially the the tablet is that other fish like them too!!

I end up have to put more in to accommodate the other fish who want to scoff them too!!

It depends on how often you feed your fish really, I only feed mine every other day. My weather loach likes them and he gets one to eat while the others eat flakes. In my biggest tank I have a few fish thast like them. Just try one when you are feeding the others flakes and see how it goes. Hopefully your oto will have had the chance to eat it before the others get at it.

That is presuming you have other fish?!

Ottos are mainly herbivours so they prefer algae wafers and vegetables, try cucumber and some blanched Brocolli or other veggies.
