My Platies keep breeding and the fry survive due to the tank being well planted with lots of places to hide. However im now coming up to the stage where im reaching crisis mode.

So many of the fry are surviving my tank will be well over stocked by the time they are adult size. I have no space for another tank. All my LFS around here are very relectant to take fish off of anyone, so i just don't know what to do next.

I thought fish keeping was meant to be calm

Is there anyway i can stop the platies breeding as i really cannot deal with any more fry.

Thanks,
Darren

How many platies have you got, if you only have 1 or 2 male ones, can you take them back along with the fry, and then they will stop breeding, drastic measures i know, but i took back my male mollie as i had the same problem, now i too have the same problem with my platies and am thinking of taking he male back, but as yet haven't been able to bring myself to part with him.

You can try rehoming them on the buy/sell section here on the forum, i would be more than willing to take some platys off your hands if you are looking to rehome them depending on where you live in Somerset- i also know of some lfs's which will take fish from customers over here too :good: .

Your LFS is reluctant, because they are worried about disease. Ask them if they can keep them in quarantine. For a store, the cost is marginal to set up an additional tank. It seems like you just want to give the fish away, not sell them. At that point, it might be worth it for the LFS to take the fish as long as they watch them for a while to see sex, color, and health develop.

Im near Taunton in Somerset you anywhere close??

I currently have two adult platies which i guess are male and female :) and currently have 5 fry. 3 which are one or so week old and 2 which are just over a month old.

What shops near you take them?

Thanks,
Darren

you could get a larger tank with agressive fish and use the platys as food? Sounds cruel I know but it would work, I breed my guppies as food for my arowana and clown knives... atleast by doing this you know what care has been taken and you know that the fish are healthy and gut loaded so your big guys won't go hungry :p

Dont really liek the idea of that as some of the fry are getting quite big. Ive put them up for free collection in the for sale/swap section. If no takers guess il have to find something to do with them all.

Thanks.

how about when your female it about to drop, removing some of the plants if your can and it may cut down the number of survivers, other than that the only other options i can think of if feeding them to other fish or giving them away, both of which you cant do, lol

Id quite happily give them away to anyone who had fish. Just my LFS dont take any fish. They were extremely reluctant to take my common goldfish although they did in the end.

Oh well.

I live in Wincanton (small town, but not that far from Taunton), my lfs (which is the only lfs in the town) will take fish from customers if you phone them up before hand, and Watermarque in Yeovil will also probably take platys and fry off you if you do the same (they've been taking in a lot of young platys in particular recently) .

Thanks.

Yeah it is strange, they didn't appear to do it before hand, but when i went there the other week they had a tank full of baby and semi-adult platys (and a few swordtails and mollys) in a tank, i asked the guy who was collecting some fish for me where they came from he said they had been brought in by customers. They may have been fry produced by livebearers the lfs sold to customers who didn't want the fry their new fish produced. It would probably be better off to check up beforehand whether they are still taking fish in just to be on the safe side though  .

Shall do just that:)

Thanks for your help. Might also have to re-home my two black moors too as i need to cut down either the topical or coldwater tank. So may have to let them go too as im trying to cut down my tanks to my nano and one community tank.
