i have two of these fish...
M_auratus1.jpg

they both are female. one is just terrorizing (sp?) the other and i cant take it anymore. she just chases the other back and fourth and all over.

so my question is should i get rid of the aggresive one and keep the other? if i do that, will the non-aggresive one start attacking all my other fish? should i get rid of them both?

i only have 11 three to four inch african cichlids in a 55 gallon tank. i have been looking for a few more but the fish store mostly has babies about 1/2 to an inch long.

what to do, im so confused :shout:

To be honest, I would return both to your LFS, Auratus are extremely aggressive, in fact down right vicious. They are best kept in a heavily populated species only tank and very rarely work in mixed Mbuna tanks.

The mans right these fish are nasty, get rid quick

There should be a pinned topic, title dont buy Auratus

It`s strange but you always see Auratus for sale in LFS` that is unless it`s a specialist African Cichlid shop/Breeder and that says it all.

Maybe your tank is under-popluated and more fish would disperse the aggression between more individuals but to be honest I think you`d be best returning them for some more peacefull Mbuna.

thanks, i just wanted to hear it from somebody else. they are very mean and gotta go i guess. the one thats getting beat up almost has no tail fin now. i dont know why the aggresive one just started to be like this. i have had all of the fish in that tank since they were babies about a year now and only lost 2 of the orignal batch i bought.

do you think that i have a good amount of fish in that size tank?

looks like im getting new fish today, yeah! :hyper: i love getting fish

Auratus are agressive, ill be the first to agree, however with regular feeding and a species only pair i have found them to have little fighting even in a small tank. Definitely never more than one male though.

what are the other fish in your tank also what fish can you get

snow whites, some blue ones with stripes and some without... i think they are powder blue cichlids, a bumble bee one, and some that are green with dark spots that i refer to as giraffe fish because thats what they look like to me.
so sorry i dont know names. i live in japan and dont speak the language. i just got back from the lfs and got 2 new ones. i can post pics later but i have never seem them before untill today. the guy said that they will go with the others so i will see after they are done floating.

The bumble bee will probably be a Maylandia Crabro, another especially aggressive species. The "Giraffe's" sound like Venustus, which are Haps and could really do with a bigger tank than a 55 gal. Snow whites could be Pseudotropheus Socolofi Albino or Albino Zebra's and the Powder Blues are likely to be Maylandia Callainos.

If you look these up on google images it should help you with id's or if you can post some pics that would help us.

Ferris, all i have to say is you are f-ing good. i googled all the names and you were 4 for 4! i only have one maylandia crabro and it seems to be fine in my tank. nobody really fights except the auratus that i took back today. they were my only problem.

okay here are some really bad pics of the 2 new fish

the second is brownish black with stripes

thank you guys for all the help. i really appreciate it

4 for 4 eh, can't be bad.

The brown one is almost certainly a female Aulonocara, not sure which species as the females all look like this.

Not sure on the orange/yellow one, could do with a close up pic. :D

heres a pic i took from google. seems to be a Haplochromis. he is showing the dark stripes now, must have been stressed from the trip.
