Hi,

I have a 300 litre tank with 18 juvenile mbuna in it. I noticed one of the dominant males digging a cave under a rock and suspect that he'll start getting frisky with his female counterparts very soon.

I knew that they would start to breed sometime and I'd like to know what to do when this happens. A guy at the LFS said that if I didn't want to have to deal wtih mbuna fry I could get fish that would eat them. Is this the case?

Alternatively I am going to have to prepare a another tank for any holding females and then somehow deal wtih the fry after she releases them.

What do you guys do with the fry? Can they be kept in teh tank, or would they multiply like crazy?

If you don't want the fry then I would just leave everything alone, when the female spits them they'll get eaten. I have a large tank and there's always a female or 2 holding, over the last 6 months I've actually had 3 fry survive but that's because there's so many rocks to hide amongst.

Agreed. You could also add some synodontis (maybe petricola or multipunctatus) cats to hunt down any fry the cichlids miss. :good:
