I might be getting a 90 gallon for Christmas and was looking into a planted discus community, but am just wondering what the rest of you would do with it.

I just noticed that I posted this in the new to the hobby. If a mod could please move this to tropical chat it would be much appreciated.

Other: mbuna of course  , although haps would look cool. A Tanganikya community would be awesome if you can find them.

Predator/oddball all the way.
A few ctenopoma, some sort of false gar, reedfish/polypterus for the bottom.

im torn between a planted discus community and mbuna, my 2 favs.

the discus will look cool for sure, but the awsomeness of a full rocky tank with the hierarchies of brightly coloured mbuna are really cool, my budy just did a 90 with just yellow labs, hes got 25 in there and it looks absolutley amazing they are breeding aswell. soooooooooooooo............ i gotta go with

MBUNA!!!!

After looking into mbuna I think they are beautiful. These tanks can't be planted though right?

They can be planted, there are two set ups that seem to work.

1 - stick with plants that herbivores won't eat, java moss/ferns, anubis species, make sure they are attached to rocks/wood (mbuna will dig up anything and everything).

2 - Have so many plants that it doesn't matter if some get nibbled on, and they will.

Either way, having plenty of rocks (or pvc, flower pots, etc) for caves/crevices is a must, they are very territorial and need their own space. :good:
