I think its time to add some new friends to my 55 gallon community tank.

Current stock is 5 zebra danios, 5 bloodfin tetras, 1 rubber pleco, 2 angels, 2 balas, 2 fancy guppies, 2 dwarf gourami.

Any comments on the current stock? Am I over or underpop'd??

Considering some invertebrates-are shrimp a good starter-invert??

Relatively new to the hobby. I am considering adding one angel...

Open to ideas-would love something colorful and fun to watch....

With the 2 balas and 2 angels, you are pretty close to fully stocked. The balas are schooling fish and really need to be kept in groups of 3 or more. They also grow to a foot or so and really need at least a 4'/75 gallon tank and preferable a 6' tank. Shrimp are a good invert but the angels may try to eat them. Not certain if the balas would bother them or not but balas will eat live food.

Well, the bala sharks get way too big for a 55 gallon tank and they like to be kept in groups of 3 or more. With those bala sharks in there I would say your current stocking is overstocked. This can be easily solved however by taking the bala sharks back to the shop and trade them for other more suitable fish.

Edit: I see rdd beat me to the punch!
