and would it need to be a species only tank - give or take the bottom feeders

Absolutely huge! It would need to be big enough and well planted enough for them to rarely encounter each other, I would say a 4 foot tank could be ok but ideally more with loads of plants caves, rocks. I wouldnt do it if I had a 12 ft tank lol

To be honest general consensus is that it should never be done. If you have a 4 foot tank why dont you get a really good sorrority of females or section off a 1ft area at the end for a male and keep females in the left over 3 foot.

Or you could even divide the tank into 4 with tank dividers and have 4 males

i'm not going to do it
just wondering what it would be
got plans for my 240 litre

well as I said its not really known as its never really done, but it would have to be very large indeed, large enough for them not to encounter each other!

No No No No  curiosity tends to get the better of newbies and they go ahead and do it when they see threads like this.

NEWBIES ~ do not do this......its just a conversation

I believe that those species can be can be kept in groups as they are wild type, and the bettas that are "fancy" that we keep as pets derive from plakats that were bred to fight and be aggressive (hence they cannot be kept together not males with females or males with males) But the original species - and these original species only- such as imbellis can be kept in groups as they do not derive from the selected bred bettas (that are aggressive).

there are no tanks big enough for the job, you would need a small pond.
