I did a search but everyone has different answers. They can grow up to 17CM (6.7 inches about).

All I want to have in the tank is a red-tailed black shark along with plants and places for it to hide. I might get some snails for eating algae but other then that no other fish.

I was wondering if a 20 US Gallon tank would be fine, or would I need something larger?

Lol , A red tailed shark dosn't need a 180 gallon tank, 40 gallons for a red tailed shark.
Think you are thinking of bala sharks and they don't need a 180 gallon either.

Alright, I will pick up a 40g then. Since coming to this site and browsing others, I have learned a ton and went from wanting a small 10g tank to now getting a 40g. Another question. What do they like to eat mostly? Most sites I check out never list what they are fed when they are in Aquariums.

My Red-Tailed Shark is a very beautiful fish but a complete pain sometimes in my 20 gallon. When they are young most of them will keep to a corner but as they get older and more moody they become secret pests. All RTS need their own cave that only they will be hanging out in right off the bat. When the light is turned on or if you are in the room they will usually stay there and keep to themselves. But when the light is off they think it is night and become extremely agressive toward any fish. My shark even attacks my pleco who is two and a half times the size of him. I love the fish to death, but people should really think before buying one of these things because they really need a tank to themselves. And I almost forgot.. mine eats leftover flakes or frozen Hakiri brine shrip. He only eats if I am watching the tank from a distance and the light is off.
