ok with all the research and answers i recieved this week i have decided an oscar won't be a good choice for my 55 gal.

now i'm thinking about a cichlid tank (not sure which type african or new world). the selection at my lfs seems good. the colors are nice and they seem to grow to a fair size to make an impact in the big tank.

a few questions:
is there anything i should keep in mind when shopping for my new fishies?
any particular type i should get? or avoid?
approx how many can i fit in my 55 gal?

any other info will be welcomed!!

you could do a dwarf cichlid tank, with a few pairs of different dwarves (apistos, nannacara, laetecara species, rams, checkerboards) and some other small community fish.

Then there could be a semi aggressive tank with 3 or four mid sized cichlids and some robust catfish.

And last, you could have a tank with only a few large fish (Like a severum, some giant danos, and a couple catfish, like synos or pim pictus)

Ditto dwarfs first suggestion but I'd add a pair or 2 of angels. A 55 should be able to handle 1 trio of apistos and 1 possibly, two pairs (if you set it up right) of rams

just my $0.02AUD
