What should be the ideal tank size for 5 Betta sisters? (The tank would have no other fish). I plan to have lots of plants and caves for hiding. But still is it advisable for a beginner to try and keep 5 female Bettas in a tank? I mean are there chances of lots of fighting which a beginner might not know how to handle?

10 is a good starter size for a group of 5 females, any less then then, even if not over crowded, and the girls seem to get nippy and bitchy.

also I have noticed that the more females in the more tank space the better they behave, in fact my sister keeps her girls in groups of 6-10 females in a 10 gallon, athough they are all sisters or raised together from tiny.

I would get the largest tank you have space for and can afford, and then go from there with the number of females.

Why not go 15-20 gallon. Bigger the better annd they'll love you for it. As said they behave better when they aren't crowded. Nice cover if any fighting does occur. Also you should be handle it i don't think they'll be any serious fights but leave that to the experts as i don't even have a betta but know a fair bit.

Just make sure your tank is cycled before you add the fish and add them at the same time so none of the females establish territories and terrorize everyone else.

If you do not add them at the same time, it is advised to move things around (break up established territory) and add the most aggressive females last.

Regular fin nipping and bickering can be expected, but you should not be overly alarmed if/when this occurs.
