What Sand Is Good?

What kind of sand sould I use for a planted tank with wild type guppies and Kuhli loaches? I want some thing that I can get from Lows or Home Depot. Thanks.

Go natural. Get a bag of sand from home depot and strain it out so all the big rocks come out. I use noodle drainer thing. Once all the big rocks are out you should have pure, natural looking sand. WASH IT and when you think its clean, wash it a couple more times. It takes a lot of washing to get sand clean.

If you feel like the sand is not safe, you can bring some water to a boil in a big pot and dump it on your sand. That will kill any bacteria.


That is what I have been doing in my tanks for years.
