Hi all!!

OK, I need to weigh down some bogwood slices for my lil' plecosaurus to nibble on - and for this, I need a rock with a hole in it. But I know that some rocks are OK and some not...

I've found four rocks that are suitable, but bearing in mind that my intimate knowledge of rocks is not-a-lot-bordering-on-bugger-all, can someone advise me if these are OK and won't leach Something Nasty into the tank:

The top two are actually fossils of marine worm-y type things, so I don't really want to use them, so that leaves the bottom two, one of which is flintlike and the other more porous.

Not being a geologist myself either, my best advice is to do a vinegar test, if you drip some vinegar (white vinegar I think) on them and they DONT fizz, then they are safe for use, if they DO fizz, dont use them.

Once the test is done, give them a good scrub in very hot water (boiling is good) and you should be good to put them straight in.

If you boil bogwood it usually helps to soak it enough so that it doesnt need weighting down, Ive never had any problems with bogwood not sinking.

Ooo!!

I'll give that a go and see what happens! Thanks!

:good:

P.S. I think the reason why my bogwood is still floating is because I'm having to saw off chunks for the lil' fella rather than sinking the whole piece (it's WAY too big for my tank!!) so the idea is to tie it to the stone and sink them both somewhere out of sight...

;)

Just from eyeballing them, they look like they will most likely pass the vinegar test. Nice rocks!
