Hi guys! new to this forum and found it very useful so far! just wondering if anyone knows what types of rock can be used in a tropical aquarium??? got some slate and mudstone(i think) in there but not sure if the mudstone will change the PH of the water or not?? The rock has been in for a month or so and had no problems so far but just found 3 dead fish in the tank so could any1 tell me if this is the problem.

ive also attached a picture of the rock-hope that helps! :/

Not sure I know what Mudstone is. How bout the pics?

Hi

Mudstones and slates shouldn't impact your pH. The only thing you should really worry about is carbonate rocks - i.e. limestones. Technically you can get lime-rich mudstones (marls), which I suppose could impact water chemistry in a set-up with soft, acidic water (low pH). Forgive me...I'm a geologist. We could talk about the difference between slates and mudstones, but you can google it if you really want to know!!
