What Reading Should I Be Getting And What Plants Should I Use

Hi all, i bought my 46l (12 us Gallon appx) fluval edge and im thinking of keeping a male betta, crystal shrimp, a group of neons and a couple of african dwarf frogs. At the moment the tank is empty, was just wondering what results i should be getting for ammonia,nitrite,nitrate, p.h etc. Also i was wondering what plants would be best for the tank, i have chosen sand as the base ad a couple of rocks in one corner. Fern moss looks alright. Should i add some wood or will that be too much with rock and plants?

You can just glue the fern to the rock. Believe it or not, super glue works well and is aquarium safe.
