I have a tank set up, and will be introducing fish next weekend.

I would like to put real plants in too. What would you recommend to begin with?

It depends very much on what lighting, substrate, equipment, hard or soft water etc you have. If you are running a low light tank with just gravel then Java ferns, java moss, anubias, cryptocorynes, hornwort, egeria densa, many of the Hygrophilas are great fast growers. Limnophila sessiliflora grows easily and looks good I think. Ludwigia repens is pretty easy and goes red if you have enough light. Amazon swords and vallis pretty easy too. There are lots more but those are among the plants I have found the easiest. As I said depends on the conditions in your tank and whether you are going to use ferts or not.

I would go with the Java fern, i dont have any problems at all growing it!!! It is the only plant that has survived my lack of light problem (hood light broke so waiting on new one!! should arrive today!!). As yet i have not resorted to putting CO2 into my tanks but the java keeps on growing!!

Good luck, hope this helps

If it is in fact low lighting i would suggest:

Jungle Val
Java Moss
Java Fern
Hornwort
Water Wisteria

All of these guys didn't have any problems in .6 WPG for more than a month

Amazon Sword always seem easy to me and dont require much light.

Don't overlook Cabomba. I have killed many different types of aquatic plant but it always grows really well without the need for CO2 or other additives.
