This is my new freshwater tank with 2 fancy goldfish. It has a few Java Ferns from a well established tank which seem to be healthy however the plant I bought about a week ago from my LFS seems to be slowly rotting. Each morning a strand seems to have broken off.

Its the plant in the far right corner. Does anyone know the name of it?

Cheers.

It looks like common Vallis to me, if it's the one I think you mean.
Reason for dying:
Not enough light?
Goldfish having a munch?

That was quick :hyper:
After googling "Vallis" it does look identical. I don't think its the goldfish having a munch because the plant seems to be rotting in the middle with rectangular/square like pixel holes if you get what I mean.
I think it's probably because of the lack of nutrients as its a new tank. Any cheap fertiliser that should help them whilst not interfering with the cycling of the tank?

Cheers.

Pretty much any off the shelf aquatic fert. I prefer either Interpet FloraBoost or Tetra Plantamin, but any will do really.

Ok, I'll look for them on my trip to the LFS! I'm 2 weeks through a fish-in cycle, how should I go about dosing the ferts? As I'm trying to do 50% water changes daily.

Cheers

goldfish wont munch on vallies, its lack of ferts. yup get some ferts and make sure you have co2 source in it as well as lights.

I'm not that keen on a CO2 diffuser. Surely if it malfunctioned it could load the water with CO2 and suffocate the fish? Any cheap CO2 diffuser recommendations that I could take a look at, bear in mind its only a 25g tank with a 25w bulb and reflector.

looking at the size of tank, you will be better off with Seachem Excel or easycarbo as your liquid co2 source, you dont need to dose it daily seeing your light, maybe 3x a week, will last long.
