I have 125 gal tank with only a Jack Dempsey in it. He/she (not sure the sex) is about 4" big. Tank has just been setup couple days ago. What other fish can I add. Pet store guy told meDempsey's are aggresive. Any suggestions?

Do you mean the tank finished cycling four days ago or the tank is literally only had water in it for a couple of days ?

If the tank is a new setup and hasn't been cycled in any form then you don't want to add anything yet as adding the JD will have started the cycle and will not have a rough few weeks living in dangerous toxins until everything settles, In this time you will need to be monitoring the stats closely or you may well lose the JD.

If this is the case you may want to think of temporarily rehoming the JD or getting your hands on some mature media

I purchased the tank of craigslist and it came with the Dempsey. I set it up over the weekend and Dempsey is fine. He's alone. I will probably wait another week before i add any new fish but just trying to find out what else i can add that Dempsey wouldnt kill.

ok, in that case what are the dimensions,

Silver Dollars and Giant Danios are very good dithers for large cichlids like JDs
Other Cichlids that should work include Convicts, Firemouths, Blue Acara, Severum etc
Catfish that are suitable include plecos, hoplos, doras, pimelodella sp.
Other fish like Bichirs,

When adding other Cichlids make sure to remove the jd, rearrange the tank and add both the JD and the newcomers to the tank at the same time, This will stop the JD from seeing the newcomer as an intruder in 'its tank'

Hi there. i have a pair of jack dempseys in my tank and also have a couple of severums gold / red spotted and green. i have a pair of parrot fish and a few cat fish. i dont have any problems with them being together. try and put a pic up of you jd so we can have a look at the sex. hope this helps

kindest regards

Okay, before we go any further: do you know what cycling is? If not, read the links in my sig about cycling. What it boils down to is that fish waste turns into ammonia, which is poisonous to fish. Bacteria over time builds up in the filter which breaks ammonia down. If you've got a new tank then you need to either cycle the tank or get mature media from another tank and put that into the filter - mature media will contain the bacteria that breaks ammonia down and makes it harmless.

If you haven't cycled the tank or added mature media you should not be adding more fish, as that'll increase the amount of ammonia in the tank and its quite possible you'll end up killing the fish.

Do you know about cycling?

Yeah dempseys can get VERY aggressive
Other large cichlids, oscars, convicts etc can work well with that much space
plecos also good and i have kept dempseys and oscars with clown loaches before
