I dunno wheather i have too many fish as it is so i thought i would seek advice.

i have a 20 gallon fresh water tropical tank, i have a male betta, a red tailed shark, 6 male guppys and 2 snails.

is this too many fish? what other fish are compatable if any?

Everything seems good in your aquarium except for the red-tailed shark, they may get aggressive. If you return the shark to a fish store, then you could add 5 or so cories, those would be great for your aquarium.

Some people will say that bettas are not compatible in community aquariums, but I don't see any problem if yours is not aggressive and does not get nipped by the guppies.

I would say corys too as they won't fin nip and harrass your betta and guppies, or maybe some african dwarf frogs, but get that shark outta there, they are lovely but naughty and eventually will nip those beautiful fins to the point of death.

You're far from overstocked and could add a fair few more fish. Most of your current stock inhabit the top half of the tank, apart from your red tailed shark. Now in terms of compatibility, i'd say you may be having problems already. Male bettas and guppies are said not to get on as the betta could mistake the colourful flowing fins of the guppies for another male betta and attack them, and red tailed sharks are normally quite nippy especially to fish with big finnage, again male bettas and guppies. I'll let you make your own choice with the fish you have, if they have been getting on together, then ok.

I would suggest something else to inhabit the bottom of the tank, you can't go too far wrong with a group of cory's, most like to be in groups of at least 4. A small catfish such as a bristle nose or rubber nose plec could go ok as they stay quite small. In general think about a total stocking level of between 20 to 30 inches worth of small to medium sized fish. Don't go for anything too territorial as they'll cause havoc in a small aquarium.

Oooh yeah definitely a bristlenose plec, they are so peaceful and cute, I have a big one in my tank and he's fab, just make sure he has something to hide in x

im rather attached to my shark, he is the most piecefull thing in the tank, just lately he is hideing more, i put more stuff in my tank so the guppys dont fight as much but since he has stayed in one place, between the wall and the filter???

but i think i would rather risk it then get rid, IF she starts nipping then i might rehome him.

but i would like 2 dwarf frogs, maby 3 more male guppys to spread out the aggression and some other fish.

i meant he yes n he is my shark sorry x and i had them 2 weeks i reckon

ten that would be why all is going so well with the betta. sometimes it takes months before a betta will suddenly turn and kill most in the tank, so if you can maybe get a 2-5 gal just for him

Hi i might be moving everything to a 10 gallon tank to save space till i move, would everything be ok in a 10 gallon or would it be too small just right or room for more?

A 10 gal is too small certainly for the red tailed shark. The smaller space would encourage more aggression from the male betta. I'd just stick with the 20 gal and move the tank when you move. If there's going to be disruption of the tank, I'd wait till you've moved. It's easier to move the tank with less fish.
