i have a 3ft by 12 inches front to back by 8 inches tall tank is there any fish that i could have a pair of to breed where the fry can stay with the parents untill there at a sellable size

that arnt to rare but not to common

and dont require live food constantly

i would say kribensis. thats prob about it. most cichlids would end up being to big for that size tank.

36x12x8 ? that sounds a little odd, maybe you mean 18 tall ?
If so, you could get something like rainbow cichlids, or firemouths
they're common fish, but they're not too common, easy to breed, and not hard to feed
 
Most Apisto Species would work fine, as would any Dicrossus species
