This morning my Oscar is looking a little sorry for himself, he has a few white marks on his body, doesnt look fungusy, more like hes taken a battering most probley from the Texas!!! The texas occassionally has a rush at the Oscar but nothing serious, I think maybe the O was trying to get away and bashed himself on the bogwood.

Other tankmates, 3 SD's, 5 BH tetras, texas cichlid and my concern for which medication to use a Black Ghost Knife fish.

I have Melafix, Pimafix, Protozin and myaxzin. Im thinking melafix and pimafix any problem with using these with the BGKF?

mine have taken some serious batterings, (just last week waldorf and some chunks taken out of him)
for wounds i find just doing water changes and keeping the water spotlessly clean are fantastic!
i have never given them meds for wounds (apart from HITH) and they soon heal :) yes they sulk and look sorry for themselves, but if i shake that food box they come rushing!

Yeah just done a 20% water change, been doing them every two days this week, those oscar pellets dont half make the gravel dirty .

Im hoping its nothing serious, he has eaten a little so he cant feel too bad.

ahhe'll be fine! i try not use the pellets anymore, there is a fab cichlid frozen food available here which they love so i feed that every other day, a 'few' pellets weekly, chopped up veg and meat the rest of the time with one day where they dont get fed per week. im lucky to have them living with catfish who are like a clean up team, whatever the oscars miss the catfish get!

I agree with Spish, having clean water and doing regular water changes really benefits fish beyond what most of us think. Ive had Oscars before had one tried getting into a cave that was half his size, he ended up taking tuna size chunks out of his head and body, it looked so bad and i thought i was going to lose him. but within a few days or so things were healing nicely.

fish are tougher than we give them credit for.

Oh no minx.... what are the chances eh?

It wouldn't hurt a bit to use Melafix and a bit of Aquarium Salt. Keep up the water changes and keep us updated.

A word on the BGK.... I would get him out of there. I tried it and it lasted for 5 days. Then I found the baby oscar trying to eat the poor guy by the tail. He managed to get almost a third of the BGK in his mouth before I smacked him in the head with a net a few times. Mind you the BGK was BIGGER than the oscar. He did quite a bit of damage and I had to return him. I then got scolded by two pet stores for trying to keep a BGK with an O.

They just cannot defend themselves and that tail is all too tempting for an Oscar. Really too bad cuz they are such cool fish.

Umm food for thought - no problems as yet, Merlin is scared stiff of him  Cant work out what he is and if/when he does come out, Merlin shifts to the other end of the tank - but I will keep an eye on them, thanks for the warning.
