Hello,

I am very new to the hobby and I am planning building my first aquarium (45 gallon salt water fish only). I am trying to decide what substrate to use. I have been told if I want to have gobies I should have a least a 50/50 sand/substrate mix? But I have also been told sand is more difficult to clean? Should I use sand just to accommodate the gobies or are gobies not worth the effort?

Another question: I was going to buy live sand/substrate. I have been told since I am using live sand, I don't need to buy live rock? Is this correct? Browsing through the fish store, I noticed the price of live rock so if I don't need it I am not going to buy it. Thanks for any advice you can give.

Hey there Brett,

Unfortunately you've posted your question in the freshwater section of the forum. If you go back to the main page and scroll down a bit, you'll see that we have a separate saltwater section. You're much more likely to find answers to your questions there.

While most gobies are saltwater fish, there are freshwater gobies that are common in the hobby.

What type of gobies?

The family of gobies is the largest fish family. There are literally thousands of goby species.

I assume it is probably the bumblebee goby, as this is one of the most common.

You'll probably want either a smooth, small gravel or preferably a sand.

there are 2 species of bumble bee goby, both should be kept in brackish conditions and one can tolerate freshwater but it isnt a good idea
