Hi there
I had a pin spot platty (thats what she was sold as, pale orange with a black spot on the base of her tail). She gave birth and died quite recently..:(

Two of her ofspring have very odd tails.

I would take a photo but they are still very small, so my expert drawing will have to do!
There are two fo these in the tank, but I have no idea if they are "real' platies or some sort of mutant..

Any ideas?

Tahnks!! :hyper:

actulluy thats a sailfin mollie u have.
Its not a molly though, I only have Platties in the tank.

Its not got a large dorsl fin, its the tail which is strange, dimond shaped...

(I will try and get a photo, but the fish are so small that it might be impossible!!)

Sounds like a weird recessive gene which has just been thrown up by chance. Wait till they get us a bit bigger and send in a photo I'd like to see them. Remember there is only one species of Platy - just different genetic variations :)

what a coincidence, I have the exact same thing with my fry. All of them normal platy tails, except for one who has the same tail as yours...
So I will be following this post, if anyone knows what this is.
It actually looks good, doesn't it? :)

*LOL*
I'm not the only one then!!:) were the stars aligned the night they were born, giving rise to mutant platties?

They do look very very cool!! I tried to get some pictures, but the little monsters are so fast, and camera shy...

its a genetic mutation found in plattys. its caused by the repeated imbreeding of fish. its not too uncommon but most people ever see grown up ones. breeders userally kill them to prevent the deformity from spreding and ruining the stock. i personaly think the abnormality is pretty cool. i have a friend who has a few of these fish. he tryed breeding them but none of the fry developed the odd tails. ill c if i can post u a picture. :D

I was just looking around on the net and I found some platys similar to your drawing. it doesn't have any info on them but there are a couple of pictures.
