Well after taking the 10 gallon back out of storage (where it was doing NO good) I decided to fill it up with some life again.

I had already painted the background blue a long time ago so no need to mess with that.

I put some water in there, along with some playsand, two cheapo aqua-tech 5-15 (walmart brand) filters on the back, two screw-in type 20w compact flourescent light bulbs, a piece of driftwood, and then I topped it off with live (and a few plastic) plants and 4 different colored mystery snails.

I plan to put some ghost shrimp (or other, haven't decided) and some ADFs in there as well.

My question is....what kind of fish do you think will get along with all these creatures?

The tank's been running I guess around 3 weeks now.

Photobucket doesn't seem to be wanting to work right now and upload my pics so maybe I'll post a couple pics later.

i'd be pretty careful when mixing ghost shrimp and fish, unless you want the ghost shrimp to be snacks for them :D . ADFs get along with pretty much anything, and since your first worry should be fish eating the ghost shrimp this shouldn't be a problem.

IMO the best bet would be a s small shoal of small fish. Maybe neons, glowlights, false neons, possbily harlequins?

Finally photobucket worked.....

I broke a piece of algae wafer up into four pieces, and wouldn't you know they all had to wrestle over this one. LOL

On the left is the golden, the top middle the ivory, the bottom middle the black, and the right is the blue one (beautiful snail). You can also see one of the pieces of algae on top of the driftwood up there, that they are totally ignoring. ;)

The fish you mentioned were excellent choices and I've thought of those too....just keeping my mind open to opinions of what else might be out there in case I might be missing something.

I'd love some red platies. They are a beautiful contrast within a green planted environment. But I've had very bad experiences with swordtails who fought constantly (both the males AND females) and don't want to go through that again. They also would compete with the snails for the algae disks.....so those are out. :(

I'm also putting cories in there and maybe a betta?

I know this may sound overstock but I've had experience with that as well. I have an AquaClear 500 on standby (almost as big as the tank) I plan to reduce the waterflow on. Will make a plant refuge/filter out of it and there are several techniques for reducing the gph rate so it would be suitable for the 10 gallon. Am also an obsessive water changer (usually twice per week) of 30% water changes.

So any other suggestions of fish besides the harlequins, glowlights, and neons?

So far you're going with some cories, a betta, ghost shrimp, and adfs + snails..

I don't know of anything other then some peaceful tetras..

Swordtails are a lot more aggressive than platies. I've always found female platies make for pleasant tanks. But you'd probably want to choose between either those or the betta, as bettas can be quite nasty to platies.

Well I still haven't gotten fish yet so its all good. I'm thinking of going with just a few harlequins or white clouds.....just a few pleasant little fish who like calm planted environments. Still debating with the idea for a betta though.

Right now I'm dealing with a little snail outburst. Wouldn't you know it, I put apple snails and live plants in there now here comes the pest snails. At first I only saw one, but I left it alone because I could have sworn it was a trumpet snail. I was like GREAT.....but turns out that was a mistake....its the pest snails. :grr:
